Is 2026 the year Emmanuel Wanyonyi breaks the 800m world record?

On Sunday in Morocco, Kenyan Emmanuel Wanyonyi will run his first 800-meter race of 2026 at the Rabat Diamond League. After a fallow period to begin the decade, the men’s 800 has become one of the deepest, most competitive events in track & field. And Wanyonyi is the man leading the way.

Wanyonyi, who is still just 21 years old, has already won Olympic and world titles. His personal best of 1:41.11 is tied for #2 all-time. The next goal on his radar is David Rudisha‘s 1:40.91 world record, set in the 2012 Olympic final — a race LetsRun.com readers voted Race of the Decade in 2019.

Each of the last seven record holders broke their first WR between the ages of 21 and 25. With Wanyonyi entering his prime record-breaking years, could 2026 be the year Rudisha’s iconic record finally goes down?

Age of the last seven 800m world record holders at time of first 800 WR

Athlete First WR Time WR Date Birth Date Age
Ralph Doubell (AUS) 1:44.3 (1:44.40) 15 Oct 1968 11 Feb 1945 23 years, 8 months
Dave Wottle (USA) 1:44.3 1 Jul 1972 7 Aug 1950 21 years, 10 months
Marcello Fiasconaro (ITA) 1:43.7 27 Jun 1973 19 Jul 1949 23 years, 11 months
Alberto Juantorena (CUB) 1:43.5 (1:43.50) 25 Jul 1976 3 Dec 1950 25 years, 7 months
Sebastian Coe (GBR) 1:42.4 (1:42.33) 5 Jul 1979 29 Sep 1956 22 years, 9 months
Wilson Kipketer (DEN) 1:41.73 7 Jul 1997 12 Dec 1972 24 years, 6 months
David Rudisha (KEN) 1:41.09 22 Aug 2010 17 Dec 1988 21 years, 8 months

Wanyonyi would not be the first member of his training group to break a world record in 2026. Like Wanyonyi, marathon world record holder Sabastian Sawe is a member of coach Claudio Berardelli‘s 2 Running Club in Kapsabet, Kenya.

There are also several similarities between Wanyonyi in 2026 and Rudisha in 2010 — the year Rudisha first broke the world record:

  • Both men are Kenyan.
  • Both men were 21 years old.
  • Both years were “off” years with no global outdoor championship.

The big difference is that Wanyonyi at the start of 2026 is way more accomplished than Rudisha was at the start of 2010. Rudisha was clearly a prodigy, winning World U20s as a 17-year-old in 2006, then running 1:44 at 18 and 1:43 at 19. But his pb at the start of 2010 was “only” 1:42.01, and he had never made a global final.

Wanyonyi, meanwhile, has already won Olympic and World Championship gold, and has broken 1:42 seven times — the same amount Rudisha did in his entire career.

Obviously Rudisha’s world record, well into its second decade, is serious business. No one is expecting Wanyonyi to break it in his first 800 of the year (in fact, Wanyoni was only 3rd in his DL opener in Rabat last season). But whether he — or rivals and fellow 1:41 men Marco Arop and Djamel Sedjati — can finally take down 1:40.91 is going to be one of the stories of the season on the circuit.

PakarPBN

A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites that are controlled by a single individual or organization and used primarily to build backlinks to a “money site” in order to influence its ranking in search engines such as Google. The core idea behind a PBN is based on the importance of backlinks in Google’s ranking algorithm. Since Google views backlinks as signals of authority and trust, some website owners attempt to artificially create these signals through a controlled network of sites.

In a typical PBN setup, the owner acquires expired or aged domains that already have existing authority, backlinks, and history. These domains are rebuilt with new content and hosted separately, often using different IP addresses, hosting providers, themes, and ownership details to make them appear unrelated. Within the content published on these sites, links are strategically placed that point to the main website the owner wants to rank higher. By doing this, the owner attempts to pass link equity (also known as “link juice”) from the PBN sites to the target website.

The purpose of a PBN is to give the impression that the target website is naturally earning links from multiple independent sources. If done effectively, this can temporarily improve keyword rankings, increase organic visibility, and drive more traffic from search results.
